@o22ie I thought about that a lot, but then I look at my MacBook Pro (which is still killing it, BTW) and I found myself wondering: “in the past four years, when did I push this machine to its extreme?”

The answer is three, maybe four times: in the end it was vastly over-spec’d for my day-to-day usage!

Listening to a Conspirituality #podcast episode about how #consumerism in the United States has been framed as a form of agency, possibly the only expression of agency. Even though the episode hasn't mentioned the #pandemic, I can't help thinking about it in the context of #covid.

It's always been baffling to me how eating at restaurants and shopping at big box stores seems to be the epitome of the good life to so many people. Isn't life defined by so much more—the knowledge you acquire, the time you spend with loved ones and the impact your make on improving the world? But if in the US, consumerism is agency, then yes, sadly, to many people, suddenly not being a consumer would be not just a supposed impingement on their freedom but a mass existential crisis. Who am I if I can't consume? I guess rather than seeking deeper meaning, people would prefer to risk illness, death and disability from covid.

A couple years ago I saw a post about a guy whose dog has to stop at the same bush every time they go for a walk because once the dog found half a pie in the bush.

This story lives rent free in my head, and it's so sad because I will never be 100% fully completely happy because I will never know why there was half a pie in the bush.
