Top comment says it well...

"Facebook/Meta are not 'joining' the fediverse... they're attacking it.

They see it's rise as a threat, so they'll do exactly what companies like google and microsoft have done in the past. They 'join, they undermine, they make changes to the underlying software that make it proprietary and incompatible with the wider activitypub network. They force a slowdown in development and adoption and they marginalize..."

@BlackAzizAnansi
Meta has the money to put into a nicer, less confusing UI for their frontend, and they can tie it into Facebook. It could attract a lot of the more normie users enough to make the rest of the fediverse flounder. At some point, they'll implement extensions that only work for them and their own services. At that point, why would anyone use anything else?

@luna @kabrams @freakazoid @tim if , , is 's goal then defederation makes sense, but I agree and I'm glad my server admins aren't taking such a reactive stance.

Ironically if they are trying to do that, polarizing the community like this would be part of the tactics for how they'd do it.

I fail to see how merely going live will compromise well moderated instances, and how hard is it to not follow an account from it?

@vncntx At the beginning, nothing. Once /Facebook/Instagram’s is the largest instance, they’ll start making “improvements” to the protocol. Other instances will have to implement them to federate. At that point, they’ll be running the show.

(If we let them. And by “we”, I mean the largest instances. mastodon.social and the other largest instances could nip this in the bud now if they wanted to. But I hear they’re out signing NDAs…)

@PaulaToThePeople Let's not forget what did to the (there so many other cases). They were using open protocol and allowed bridging until enough people got on slack. Then they've just cut the bridge and the rest of the users were forced to jump over.A school case of tactics often adopted by big corpo when handling projects. I don't think anything good comes out of federating with unless somehow outwits them. But why even bother?

You seem to be skating right by history

This is and aka

, ,

"Extinguish: When extensions become a de facto standard because of their dominant market share, they marginalize competitors that do not or cannot support the new extensions"

And this needs attention:

"That will theoretically allow..."

"theoretically"

"...to take their accounts and followers with them to other apps"

Yeah

@derek for me it feels more like the fase before trying to and then the Fediverse. Facebook/Meta has never ever done something without an ulterior motive 🤷🏻‍♀️

@maegul There are a lot of possible strategies for corporate entries into the ; some benign and constructive, some others not so much. certainly would work and the fediverse currently does not have an effective defense against that that I can see.

@ben @eloquence @mozilla If the fediverse/ActivityPub/Mastodon thing is going to have any legs whatsoever this time around, it will be 100% certain that some big platforms are going to try an -- strategy with it. Because they always have, and the logic from their point of view remains the same why this is the right strategy for them. How are we going to keep that from happening? Keep the small enough to not be interesting? 😛 Or ...

I understand @migurski enthusiasm about it, as he can count it as a personal victory in this initial phase of the , but we have not forgotten the bait and switch. , are next, and we would rather NOT see get the treatment.
