Heat Is Not a Metaphor

As the hottest summer on record draws to a close, how do we make sense of the images of a #climate in crisis?

"I wanted to write a poem about how the extreme heat of the ocean is breaking my heart, but the #whales beat me to it. In late July, almost 100 long-finned pilot whales left the deep, usually cold waters where they live—so deep, so cold that scientists have barely been able to study them. Together they came to the coast of western Australia and huddled into a massive heart shape (if your heart were shaped like 100 black whales, like mine is). Then, collectively, they stranded themselves on the shore. As soon as they lost the support of the water, their chest walls crushed their internal organs. They literally broke their hearts. Choreographed under helicopter cameras.

"I want to write a poem about how #capitalism is a sinking ship and how the extreme wealth-hoarding and #extractive polluting systems that benefit a few #billionaires are destroying our planet and killing us all. But the #orcas beat me to it. Off the Iberian coast of Europe, the orcas collaborated and taught each other how to sink the yachts of the superrich. They literally sank the boats. While Twitter cheered.

"The sinking ship is no longer a metaphor. The broken heart is no longer a metaphor. Who needs a metaphor in times as hot and blunt as ours? Let’s make it plain."

Limiting federation with #ExtractiveSocialNetworks as a choice breaks the covenant and banishes the limiting servers. Allowing #actors to vote with their #resources by moving to servers that don't take extractive resources has a value equal to or greater than the choice of allowing federation with extractive social networks because the choice to move acts as an evolutionary force.

"Drinking" from the "sugar-water" of easy extractive-sourced money allows the #Ecosystem to develop a dependence on and organizing force around the sugar-water and quenches the #Evolutionary forces for creating the elements of an alternative #SocialEcosystems or #FederatedEcosystems that don't require "sugar-water" (#Extractive sources).

Money is a value system, is always relevant, though not a panacea and each town is different.

In terms of allocating #resources value, govt have served #propertyDevelopers interests and drained resources from local and #regenerativeAg, which helps solve other problems.

We're happy you mention "where people want to live/work". The #corporateState directs a narrative and value system here, its upsidedown and serves an '#extractive' class.

“The #Biden administration is keeping the cost of grazing a cow and calf on federal land at $1.35 per month. #Conservation groups say this low fee – the minimum it can be under federal law – comes at a high cost to #Western lands and the climate.

The #federal grazing fee has remained at a monthly rate of $1.35 per “animal unit” – one cow and her calf, one horse, or five sheep or goats – since 2019, when the #Trump administration lowered the fee from $1.41. It applies to the nearly 18,000 permits and leases issued by the Bureau of Land Management and 6,250 permits by the Forest Service.

In 2022, the average fee for grazing #cattle on state land in the West was $23.90 per month for each cow and her calf, according to the Department of #Agriculture.”

BLM must lead, prioritize meaningful conservation

The Journal’s (Dec. 30) editorial encouraging the Biden administration – and specifically Interior Secretary Deb Haaland’s Bureau of Land Management – to prioritize managing the West’s public lands “for #resiliency and #sustainability” hit the nail right on the head.

The time has certainly arrived and, in reality, is long overdue for BLM to put the protection of New Mexico’s and our nation’s wildest public lands, the health of its crucial #rivers and streams, and the integrity of its irreplaceable #sacred sites and cultural #resources on even footing with #extractive industry.

However, as I learned in my "Natural Resources and Land Use Law and Policy" class last fall, there are really good reasons for keeping public lands under #federal instead of #state control. For one thing, states would be under enormous pressure to allow #extractive industries to access these public lands, thus degrading them and the #ecosystem services they provide.

And as it is, the federal government practically gives away our natural resources.

Grazing privileges on Idaho sage #grouse habitat are revoked

A judge vacated a decision that would have allowed domestic sheep to #graze public land in southeastern #Idaho.

The initial 2021 decision authorized more than 16,000 sheep to graze on Bureau of Land Management Land near Twin Buttes, which is also a winter migration corridor for the sage grouse.
