I just saw on a friend’s Insta story a stupid video of a cop (#ACAB) being disgorged at great speed from a playground slide

Minutes later I saw a post (RIP ‘tweet’) about it in the ruins of the bird app and felt disgusted that I already knew what it referred to

I’ve got to become more offline

I hate what it does to my brain

What else could I be achieving with this time I waste

I don’t know how to quit because I still work in the media industry

Ironically I recently worked on a forthcoming book about how journalists struggle to ‘disconnect’ from the expectation to be ‘always-on’

I’m posting this here as Mastodon is a calmer platform

I just shared this morning’s Birdsite news with my not-extremely online spouse, and a few minutes later he muttered from the other side of the sofa

“Hashtag sorry to see you go,”

after just deactivating his account, just like that.

No archive download, no mastodon migration, no concern about lost audience, just … deactivated.
