Honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos). The thorns are incredibly sharp, and on several memorable occasions I've jammed my head into low-hanging branches while looking for insects and mushrooms on the ground. Thorn of a Honey Locust (I think), planted as a #StreetTree -- this is a N American species in the pea or legume family #Fabaceae. A similar introduced 'thorn tree' is encountered in southern Africa and has a bad rep as invasive, thought it could also be seen as worldmaking. The pea family is formidable and important, immense powers of foraging, and third largest flowering plant family. The thorns must have evolved to deter species long extinct.

Wow, it's unusual to see Wisteria make an appearance as a botanical motif in clothing.

@trregeagle There are so many cool aspects about #peanuts. Peanuts belong to the #legume family (#Fabaceae) like peas, beans, chickpeas, or lupins fava beans.
As it is typical for legumes, the plants develop a close relationship with certain soil bacteria, which grow into the legume root and produce #RootNodules. Only in these nodules, these #bacteria start to fix nitrogen, which is then stred as #protein in the seeds of the #plant. That's why legumes are so valuable as #food.

Today's cross section is a stem of pea (Pisum sativum, #Fabaceae).
A square and hollow stem with a dozen of vascular bundles :
- Inner dark region with white circles = xylem with its vessel elements ;
- Outer light region = phloem.
Outside phloem : fibers, especially in the corners.
