My Life With Face Blindness

When your brain won’t let you recognize people, how do you navigate the world?
This spring, I found out that I have a rare neurological disorder known as prosopagnosia, or face blindness. This discovery sent me on a journey that I thought, at first, would be a lark. After all, I’m a happy, successful adult — who cares if my brain isn’t quite like everyone else’s?

Do any other neurospicies / autists out there find that their face blindness is worse sometimes more than others?

Mine seems particularly bad at the moment.

AHhhh! Thank you, yes! I've just rewatched season one of Expanse and he'd felt familiar but I couldn't work out why.

On Monday at the café, I thought the barista had cut off his shoulder-length hair. But I never say anything about haircuts because I'm face blind and get really weird about "am I remembering correctly." And today, he's got long hair again, so obviously it was someone else, and I'm simultaneously saved and damned by my own deficiencies.

It is Autism Awareness etc. Month! To celebrate Ye Olde Blogge is publishing an autism-themed post once a week for the month.

This week it reviews research into the relationship between face blindness and autism and possible treatments. It is an interesting alternative to looking at autism and goes deeper than your average awareness article does.

How not to treat people with face blindness (and lose business goodwill at the same time) - insist that the person (who you know cannot remember faces) will "figure it out, so I'll leave you to it" and walk off smirking.

For me,this is awful to experience.

And fair warning: I will get some help, figure out who you are, and never - ever - refer people to you because you are neither safe nor compassionate and we work in allied fields. Because if you do this to me and you have met me, what will you do to someone with trauma, special needs, other challenges?!

Be kind to others, and don't play spiteful games with people, it hurts everyone.

Have a good, and compassionate, day.

@BZBrainz @actuallyautistic I've not been formally diagnosed with prosopagnosia, but I''ve definitely got it going on. I've cluelessly walked past people I've known for 20 years on the street more than once.

@actuallyautistic Don’t often meet people who experience the spectrum of . It’s a big hurdle for me at work and in public, it’s hard to explain concisely, and has been the source of a lot of hurt feelings for people who feel slighted if I don’t recognize them out of typical contexts.

This is actually the second time I tested myself for - the first time was 11 years ago and I barely beat 50% last time. I managed 61% this time but I guessed so much I really wonder if I didn't get lucky a few times.

I think I did alright with the part of the test where they only presented me with one face to remember. It was the of six faces later where I Just could not remember who I had seen. Anyone else test as poorly on this?

What the Hell is Face Blindness (Prosopagnosia)?

In Carbon Bomb (#1516) @2:17, John sought more info on this condition:
youtube.com/watch?v=XcgK_7kQUw

"Prosopagnosia is a condition where you struggle to recognize faces or can’t interpret facial expressions and cues. It usually happens because of brain damage, but some people have it at birth."
my.clevelandclinic.org/health/

It impacts 2% of the population, and is usually undiagnosed.

I was always kind of attracted to people who do not conform to conventional ideals of beauty. Why? That's mainly because It's more likely I can remeber who they are due to (). If someone told me there was only one person on all fashion magazines that were ever produced i'd believe them in a heartbeat.

@holyramenempire That's really interesting - thanks - will have to try it.

I always feel I should be able to do better at face recognition, and that I'm simply *doing it wrong*, rather than it being a cognitive impossibility.

A way of breaking down the process into smaller steps sounds like just what I need.
