Weird question for #HigherEducation #faculty at universities where it isn’t the norm for undergrads to first-name their professors: How do you handle situations where students sit on committees with faculty?

It feels a little bit weird for all of us in the room to call each other by our first names except for the one undergrad who calls us “Prof. XYZ”—but OTOH it’s also a bit strange to tell the student to call us by our first names in this room but then go back to “Prof. XYZ” elsewhere.

The political climate in #Texas is the leading contributor to professors' desire to leave the state, a new survey of more than 1,900 Texas #faculty members found. This morning brought a surprise and tears of joy for this Retired Old Prof. Two former Masters students met for the first time at an international conference and took the time to take a photo, and message the old man.

Both were exceptional students.

Both went on to complete their Doctorates at first tier institutions in Structural Geology.

Both have become leaders in their subfields.

Working with both was a greatly rewarding.

More and more I have come to understand that we #Faculty are merely catalysts that facilitate growth and learning. It is not our job to spout arcane facts or derive wonderful equations. We are here to teach students how to learn, how to think, how to solve problems, and how to thrive in their own space and time. We live to be surpassed. Both of these young professionals have greatly surpassed their faculty. Feeling:

#Pride
#Joy
#Happiness

Over their great success.

Already one hour into an 8-hour (!) day of #faculty RE-orientation, neither the rationale nor the length of which is clear. WTAF All I can think of is the Khmer Rouge and reeducation camps.

Wish me luck! If I survive, I expect I will emerge as a diligent rice farmer who truly loves Big Brother
