Late to the party with this, probably. Fun song/vid nonetheless...
"I’m here to certify that I am an official member
Of the latitude 66 aurora borealis life
Good stuff is happening all around me
People are high-fiving
People are freaking out "
- The Front Bottoms: Fairbanks, Alaska
Teachers in Fairbanks have a new contract after 20 months of negotiations.
What's good for them is good for us. A rising tide lifts all boats.
And this:
"The school board also voted unanimously to recognize October 9 as Indigenous People’s Day, replacing the day usually celebrated as Christopher Columbus Day."

End of the road.
Is #Fairbanks a walkable town?
Depends on your definition of walkable. And the time of year. And what you need in the way of scenery. And how long your car is in the shop.
Today, yes, Fairbanks is a walkable town, but I'm willing to cede the point to those who disagree.
Many Google Street Map views of #Fairbanks are well outdated and pretty unhelpful.
Here's the most current shot of the old Foodland building on Lacey. Date: 2007. Vacant and boarded up.
(Note: the Co-op Grocery has been doing business here since 2013.)
Not sure Fairbanks still lays claim to being at the "End of the Alaska Hi-Way".
Also note the Start/Finish line banner for the Yukon 800 Marathon (a 2-day high speed riverboat race).

FAI sweet FAI. Good to be home.
Happy 10th anniversary to the Co-op
"The Co-op is an alternative to big box stores who have no interest locally," according to Richard Seifert, one of the founding owners. "We can't compete but we have a vested interest in owning and controlling our food supply."

One of the coaches at Ascension Rock Club is helping out with duck banding this year at Creamer's Field, and she took me and our Team Ascension climbing kids and families out to band today. It was tons of fun, and no one got too wet. I think everyone was smiling the whole time! As usual, I took lots of photos (still uploading at this posting), here's the link to the gallery: https://photos.lwpetersen.com/Date/2023/August/2023-08-19/
Happy #FossilFriday from the #Alaska State Museum! In the Lower 48, most #mammoth fossils are Columbian #mammoths, but the colder climates of the Last Frontier favored its hairy cousin. These woolly mammoth #tusks were found in the #permafrost around #Fairbanks, but they're common enough across Alaska that they've been named its state #fossil!

Something seems really strange with the PAFA NWS forecast for tonight and tomorrow. The graphics (which seems to align with the narrative) suggests a high of 56F at 3am tonight, and then a low of 46F at 3pm tomorrow. It's as if they accidentally shifted this by 12 hours?
I'm attaching there's, plus the Windy Multimodel, which seems more believable. But, maybe I'm missing something...
Northern Alaska AFD from last night. Summer appears to be over.

Check out this flying saucer invasion from planet Lenticularis. This would have been at approximately 5pm AKDT, which would have been shortly after the tstorms had passed through.
The webcam is screen dumped from Windy.com.
Last time I saw this many saucers was about 15 years ago early in the morning over the Rattlesnake Mountains north of Missoula, Montana.

Star gentian (Swertia perennis) is blooming all down our road today—such a pretty late-season flower. Info in my Alaska Wildflower Guide: https://www.lwpetersen.com/alaska-wildflowers/star-gentian-swertia-perennis/
