The first Kentucky Fried Chicken in Alaska opened in 1959, in Fairbanks at the Redwood Barbcue. The $1.75 opening deal would be about $18.50 now. The way it worked then, a restaurant would simply buy a license for the KFC product but not be a KFC store.

Historians are trained to focus on important words and phrases, like "the smoldering ruins of the Dairy Queen." In case you've ever wondered why Fairbanks doesn't have any Dairy Queens now, one of them blew up in 1984. Other became the Oasis.
