Wednesday is a walking day with Broxo at the town beach at #WestIsland in #Fairhaven #Massachusetts. He played with some of his dog friends, but at first it was just the two of us.

The #Fairhaven #Massachusetts Visitors Center is housed in an 18th Century building, so my dooryard garden is planted with herbs and flowering perennials that would have been available in 1798 when the building was built. The common orange #daylilies are starting to pop up.

In my coastal #Massachusetts planting zone (7a), #Rosemary can winter over in south-facing areas, especially close to a wall that reflects the warmth back at the plant. This variety "Arp" is particularly hardy here. This has been growing for years now in the #Fairhaven Visitors Center herb garden. I have cuttings rooting indoors.

West Island Town Beach in #Fairhaven #Massachusetts is the site of a 48 foot high WWII aircraft and submarine spotting tower that overlooks Buzzards Bay and some of the Elizabeth Islands.

On Tuesday I read this book to a class of third graders. It is about a young man who became the first #Japanese person to live in the United States in the 1840s, right here in #Fairhaven #Massachusetts. The Romanesque style Millicent Library in #Fairhaven #Massachusetts was financed by industrialist Henry H. Rogers of the Standard Oil Co. in memory of his daughter who died at the age of seventeen. It was designed by architect Charles Brigham and was dedicated January 30, 1893, what would have been Millicent's 20th birthday. These cannon have been in my hometown since before the Civil War, but Fort Phoenix itself was originally built in what is now #Fairhaven between 1775 and 1777, only to be destroyed by British troops in September 1778. There are five of these Seacoast Defense guns here. They are fired with blank charges of black powder a few times a year. Limestone carving above the east entrance of #Fairhaven High School in #Massachusetts. Italian stone cutters were brought to America to work of the buildings donated to the town by Standard Oil Co. executive Henry H. Rogers (1840-1909).
