I’m a man of science and I’ve definitely seen things in my life I can’t explain.

„Belief in is or was formerly widespread in the Isle of Man. They live in green hillsides, more especially ancient tumuli. Anyone straying near these on a fine summer's evening would probably hear delightful music; but he must take care, especially if he is a musician, not to linger lest he should be entrapped.“

At last Johnny Farquharson, the "Witch" or "Fairy" Doctor, was constrained to summon the out of The Seely Howe. `On the ground that the summons was defective inasmuch as it had failed to indicate an assigned destination, the fairies refused to move. Johnny thereupon peremptorily ordered them to remove to the "Hill of Fare," about seventeen miles distant, and near the town of Banchory. Reluctantly the little people obeyed the behest, but first left with their quondam friend a permanent reminder of their opposition and malice`:
"Now we maun awa' to the cauld hill o' Fare,
"Or it will be mornin' e'er we get there ;
"But though girs and corn should grow in the air
"John Farquharson and his folk shall thrive nae mair."

In fairy lore, there is the concept of the Otherworld, which is where the fairies live and the Sidhe. You can get there many ways, but if you suddenly see mist or fog come from nowhere, it could be a opening into the fairy realm.

In fairy lore there is the concept of fairy gold. It is money given by the fairies. At first appearance it looks usable but it isn’t. Some stories it turns into leaves when the fairies depart.

Ghillie Dhu was a type of fairy from Scottish Folklore. He was covered in moss and lived in a birch wood. He would be very aggressive to adults but had a very affectionate and gentle nature to children.

We are come in a stone boat,
a miracle ship that steers itself
round skerries where guillemots
and shags stand still as graves…

In folklore surrounding fairies, Brownies were fairies that would come out at night to clean your house! They would clean and expect no praise. In fact, if you praised them, they would be insulted and leave. They loved offerings of milk and honey left to them.

There would be *a lot* to say about the , or
Each country has several beliefs, sometimes very different one from each other, but this is one of those that can be found in many places, with different names.

Probably, the most famous version is the one, the Danann², or Danaan. In this , we can find many stories about several characters who twisted their destiny with the mortals' ones.

Similarly, a less noble version of a similar concept is from : they are often called pixies, or . This is a general term to indicate a universe of extremely diverse creatures, it depends very much on the region: they can be more helpful (as the Brownie³ from ), or even extremely dangerous (like the Cu Sith⁴, a ghostly dog from the Highlands).

Also, in all places, stories have been… Christianized, in the last centuries. For example, in , it was said that the Hidden People were the children of Adam and Eve, who lied to God when He asked if she had any children. Since she was ashamed the babies weren't washed (baptized) yet, she lied, and the children escaped to a lake. From then, they lived in pools of water or in rocks… like .

In fact, , dwarves, , and similar beings are pretty much all derived from the concept of Hidden People: some beings we can't properly see, but they are real indeed — we can *feel* it. And they have a huge power that should not be underestimated.
