My friend Kate, who told me all this, also said that she'd tried to become invisible by running around the hawthorn three times clockwise when she was a child. At the end of the third time she got scared but felt already half invisible, so she somehow managed to change direction to run around another three times anticlockwise. After that she felt safe but never did it again!

Single hawthorn trees on a meadow are supposed to be fairy trees in Irish mythology. That's probably why there's still so many of them although there's not much woodland left in general. They're also often found around very old gravestones, so that the fairies, who live in or under them, could protect the dead. Bad luck to cut an old hawthorn down and bad luck to bring the flowers into the house!
