This was the decision in 1981 to scrap Her Majesty's Ice Ship Endurance - the sole British naval vessel within thousands of miles of the #falklandislands - without providing for a replacement . This helped to precipitate a very costly war early the following year!

This is from #OnThisDay in 2016 when we visited the #FalklandIslands and enjoyed a tour of the battlefields before enough time in #Stanley to explore, hit a museum, and a pub. They hold Maggie in high regards in the Falklands, but despite that the islanders are very nice people.

For #PhotoOfTheDay we visit the Falkland Islands and Mount Tumbledown, site of one of the major battles of the Falklands War. Mount Tumbledown is one of the highest points close to Stanley and a memorial cross has been erected on the summit.

The #fishing boat density north of the #falklandislands looks way too high. Is that normal?

For #ThrowbackThursday here's a shot from 1982 when my family - like so many other families in #Portsmouth - headed down to #Southsea to see off the task force setting sail for the #Falklands following the invasion by Argentina. That is the aircraft carrier #HMSHermes in shot as our family was friends with another, the father of which ran the boiler rooms aboard.

A pair of rockhopper penguins appear to have selected a rocky nesting site. It's going to need a lot of tussock grass padding!

Though not as fast, my favourite #parkrun of the year was at Cape Pembroke in the beautiful #FalklandIslands a couple of weeks ago, out and back to the lighthouse. Battled against the wind for my first ever top 20 finish (17 out of 35!) and got a nice list of birds spotted at the same time.

There's an interesting #ASUAntarctica2022 thread to follow if you like #science and scenery, and since they're in the #Falklands today I thought I'd share some #TravelPhotography from when we visited back in 2016. We opted to explore the #FalklandsWar battlefields rather than nature options on that trip; you can see wreckage of an Argentinian #Chinook #Helicopter in the third shot. The first #photo is the mizzen mast of the #SSGreatBritain in #Stanley.

Today's #PhotoOfTheDay is from New Island in the Falklands.

We visited a colony of rockhopper penguins who were in the middle of nest building. This fella was unsure about the new creatures sitting close by in the tussocks of grass but his partner was insistent that more grass was needed for the nest and so it time to put his head down and face those fears.

They were amazing fearless little birds.

Scurvy grass grows wild in the Falkland Islands and is renowned for its high vitamin C content.

Back in the day the grass was carried in dried bundles or distilled in liquid in an attempt to keep scurvy at bay.
