So I'm writing Book 3.5 of my Shared Moments fanfiction, and I realized by writing this series, there is a lot of ableism in fandoms.

It's a little depressing really.

I already had a few commenters angry because Asami had a hand tremor due to nerve damage from being barraged by the massive amount of energy at Harmonic Convergence....

... sorry, but that's gonna cause health problems, and I want to write about that. How the characters adapt. How it's totally okay to have a disability, and how disabled people can be loved and appreciated as they are.

I mean, isn't that Korra's arc between Book 3 and midday way through Book 4? She has to relearn how to walk, is in a wheelchair for awhile, and she struggles with massive PTSD. But she's still loved by her family and friends, who desperately want to support her (if she'd let them). Asami is in love with her still and always will be (they are the cutest couple), and offered to go with her South to keep taking care of her. She was willing to give up everything to stay by Korra's side. That arc was beautiful - how Korra had a temporary disability and how she healed.

Yes, disability can be temporary or permanent. Anyone can become disabled at any time.

And yet, the moment disability shows up in fanfics, there's commenters that rage about how horrible and bad that is?

*sighs* their ableism is showing, and it's very aggravating. I'm going to block their ass if they keep showing up and being an ableist jerk.

I am writing this fanfiction because I love these characters, it helps me combat brain fog, keeps me going when I'm too ill to do anything else, and because I wanted to tackle complex topics and have more queer and disabled rep in the fandom

In other writing news, I'm very slowly returning to my original fiction writing, but it's so much harder to do when I'm ill due to the massive amounts of planning, worldbuilding, and far, far more editing required. So it takes a lot more energy than fanfiction.

But it's progress? Not much, but I'll take what I can get considering how poor my health is currently.
