Using cosplay as a jumping-off point, this essay tells the story of a little-known sematic shift, exploring what happens when the mainstream coopts a grassroots term. As I argue, no shift in usage is ever so niche as to go unminded. Watching the “Welcome to Wrexham” doc. The McElhenney & Reynolds story is compelling (and amusing—Ted Lasso comparisons hard to avoid), but I am impressed most by its consistent focus on the Wrexham fan community and its history. “Ultimately, the show argues that celebrity culture reveals truths about broader society. “The exhibition looks like an elixir of pop culture offerings, but it’s actually about providing an alternative gateway to reconnect with social and political landscapes in Southeast Asia and East Asia,” says Cheng. “Celebrities are an embodiment of what is happening in a certain geographical and temporal location.”

An interesting write-up on an upcoming exhibition which uses (Hong Kong) celebrity culture as a lens to look at fans’ relationship with celebrities and how it relates to our lived experience.
