"Still Life with Mustard Pot," Henri Fantin-Latour, 1860.
Although a great friend of the early Impressionists, Fantin-Latour was a conservative artist himself, although there's nothing wrong with that. This early still life has a glorious simplicity and attention to detail that I find most appealing. It's almost Zen in its study of white and gray, and the colors from the cutlery are not jarring in the least. Very nice.
