On this day in 1979, Nicaragua threw off the shackles of US imperialism when the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) ousted the brutal US backed dictator Anastasio Somoza. But their struggle wouldn't end with freedom, having to endure decades more of US economic and military interference. In spite of that, the FSLN have transformed Nicaragua from one of the poorest countries in the Americas to one where extreme poverty has been almost eradicated.
