The Q4 (Jan-Mar) GDP and the FY 2022-'23 estimates flatter to deceive. Fact is the Indian Economy did "grow", but for whom and by whom.

For instance, the 7.2% economic growth is largely powered by the "services" sector, contributing nearly 60% of the overall GDP.

This is why I call our "vaunted" fastest growing major economy an One Pony Trick.

#india is the #fastestgrowing #economy among the #world's major #economies! However, record #unemployment and grotesque #inequality mar its "headline-grabbing" #growth #rates.

#india is a country where #billionnaires are as ubiquitous as those who almost #beg for #livingwage. Its fabled #software #firms jostle for space with the #poor and the #destitute scrounging to make a living.

My #two #rupees take on "understanding" the #india #story.

There is much talk about an #indian #renaissance, with "breathless" commentary on the #fastestgrowing #indianeconomy.

For those of us who came of age during the #90s, with the #firstwave of #liberalizaion, #privatization, and #globalization, the #past offers some #lessons for the #present and the #future of #india.

Lest we forget, we just cannot become another #authoritarian #superpower, much like #china, the obsession of #india's #elites as a #rolemodel.
