Back off Productivity, today is not your day! Serious case of post-#fastpacking #trailrunning recovery going on after a big weekend. So far, I’ve unpacked my bag and hung the tent up to dry, postponed a customer meeting, and eaten everything in sight.

I’ve been getting “weight-weenie” on my kit for this weekend’s planned #trailrunning circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight with @iowrunner. Saved 75g by taking my smaller headtorch, a few grammes trimming 5cm off my toothbrush, and 55g leaving out a stick pack of Tailwind. Promptly added this all back in with a vegan Firepot dehydrated evening meal but at least that’s >500 kCal. Expect final pack weight around 7.2kg including 1 litre of water. Which is heavy😬 #fastpacking #ultrarunning

I don’t play the light as possible game, it just happens by default by aiming to run what’s runnable.

If I really wanted to cut weight, I’d skip the inflatable matt & pillow, fill sack, bivy, down balaclava, wind layers, half the calories, and power pack. None are needed for a spontaneous overnighter, it’s just nice to have so much spare weight that there’s no reason not to pamper myself.

First camp of the year yesterday! Tried out my new tent (Lanshan 1) and pack (Ultimate Direction Fastpackher 30l) on a quick overnighter close to home. Surprise thunderstorm on the way but the tent held up during the midnight showers. Need to dial the pack in a bit more for running though. And next time bring coffee for the morning 🥱

Heading south on trail from home to see how high into the San Gabriels I can get before there’s too much snow. I’d like to visit Todd at the ranger station up on the saddle, but I bet it’ll be too deep half way up. Mt Gleason looks buried.

Got down to Mattox Creek and napped to creek sounds, helped some hikers who were going slow (sat msg), napped again till 11:30, on the move again. Nice night, lots of stars.

Got to the North Fork Ranger Station, filled up at the cache, chatted with Ranger Todd, continuing down to Mattox Canyon. May bivy there or keep going. 17 down, 18 more to get home. Logged over 3 dozen downed trees for removal for my trail crew.

Back in fall I started looking for a new fastpack. I use a running vest for multi day stuff, but want split setups to specialize.

There’s nothing in the market that fits my needs so I follow experimental ultralight and fastpack custom makers.

Found a guy who’s design is between a run vest and a UL pack and we’ve been working together for 3 months taking my mod requests trying different materials.

I’ll share when it’s done.

🪡 Made a pair of ultralight fleece leggings today with Polartec Alpha Direct. Total weight 3.4 oz. I love this material. I’ve put 1,500 miles on my Farpoint OG hoodie, so I wanted to try making my own leggings with some salvage material I had.

I didn’t have enough to do a proper pant pattern, but I figured out a workaround that actually worked.
