The #Guardian obit for #RobbieRobertson makes a good point. When Robertson penned #TheWeight, his writing influences were #BobDylan meets #Faulkner, #EudoraWelty & #FlanneryOConnor.

Contrast the average 15-20 word sentence with Faulkner's epic 1,288-word sentence from the book "Absalom, Absalom!" it's a run-on sentence marvel!

Sentence decoded with #NLP via {udpipe} R package to get the universal parts-of-speech tags.

Ultimately, I thought it was an interesting way to illustrate the cognitive load that a reader might deal with trying to comprehend such a large sentence.

@ruralgloom I heard a sad story about #Faulkner. A family member recounted their relative studied at #UVA with Faulkner, sending him a manuscript to review, and Faulkner told him it was the worst he had ever read or seen and to never write again. The lad obeyed. Sounds like a terrible collision of (perhaps) two clinically depressed folks.

I wonder how Flannery would have handled. I can’t think of right wing expressions of religiosity without her “church of Christ without Christ”.
