The Fauves, led by Matisse, van Dongen, Derain and others. It was an old boy's club, right? No. A new exhibition demonstrates how women were central to the movement—as artists, dealers, and inspiration. news.artnet.com/art-world/fauv

"The Window at La Goulette," Albert Marquet, 1926.

Depicting a scene at the Tunisian port of La Goulette, this calm and smooth canvas is a nice example of Fauvism. Marquet would later move on to a more naturalistic style, but this is quite nice and a good summer painting.

From the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, France.

Happy birthday to writer, statesman and polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). Made for the Fauvism prompt: This print is a hand-printed, limited edition, reduction block print portrait. While best known for his contributions to German literature, he pursued natural sciences, studying morphology,

They enjoyed a mutually-inspiring friendship from the moment they met as young emigres in Paris in 1905, and a host of 20th century artists drew inspiration from the creative energy that burned between them. The friendship between Picasso & Stein in the Parisian avant-garde scene of the beginning of the 20th century created a lasting legacy in all of the arts. sothebys.com/en/articles/gertr

“The Docks of the Port of Bastia” Auguste Herbin, French, 1907

Before settling in Paris, where he first joined the Impressionists and later the Fauves, Herbin attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lille from 1900 onwards. His studio was situated directly next to Braque's and Picasso's, allowing a close study of Cubism. In 1917 he moved on to an abstract, geometric phase before gradually discovering Constructivism.

Putting down his brushes in the late 1920s came as a form of liberation for Matisse, who found respite in the raw simplicity of clay. In manipulating clay, he discovered a physical release from the anxieties of the pictorial plane.

'After Impressionism' focuses on the cultural upheaval from 1886 to the start of World War I in 1914—a time in which many European artists broke with established tradition and boldly laid out foundations for art, spawning Fauvism, Expressionism & Cubism. @ London's National Gallery. christies.com/features/after-i

This restless Frenchman helped establish some of the 20th century’s most important art movements — and then moved on in search of the new. Picabia explained that an artist ‘must express the emotion which nature made him feel without the least care for technique.' christies.com/features/francis

Cézanne->Franz Marc->Picasso.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I mean that has to already be a thing but I kind of put it together myself.

Kupka – Pioneer of Abstract Art

Art history remembers Mondrian, Malevitch and Kandinsky as founders of abstract art and forgets about Frantisek Kupka (1871-1957). Born in Bohemia, the Czech artist was nevertheless the first to exhibit a non-figurative work as early as 1912.
