I'm researching songs for the #1992 edition of my endeavor.

One would think this is easy, but honestly it's a massive undertaking. I have to pull up basically every album or single released in 1992... and because I'm a big weirdo, I can't just look at the top 100 most popular albums released that year, because chances are most of my favorite songs from a given year barely even charted. This is like digging through crates at a record shop, but with less dust. šŸ˜‚

Oh the irony, I'm pretty sure that I would only have recognized maybe 3 of these songs in 1990.

Fortunately, time has afforded me the ability to work backwards. :blobcatdance:

I know my tastes can be quite off-the-beaten-path, and many of these songs will look unfamiliar, so I'm gonna tag these with genres, since some folks might find that helpful, should they wanna investigate.

So, here's my runner-ups for favorite song of 1990:

1000 Homo DJs - Supernaut [electronic, industrial]
AC/DC - Thunderstruck [metal, hard rock]
Alice in Chains - Man in the Box [hard rock, grunge]
Black Crowes - Twice as Hard [hard rock, blues]
Concrete Blonde - Lullabye [alt. rock, kinda mellow]
Depeche Mode - Policy of Truth [synthpop]
EMF - Unbelievable [electronic, alt. rock]
Information Society - A Knife and a Fork [electronic, dance]
Information Society - Mirrorshades [electronic, synthpop]
INXS - Disappear [rock, pop]
King Missile - Cheesecake Truck [alt. rock, humorous]
KMFDM - NaĆÆve [electronic, industrial, dance]
Lush - Sweetness & Light [alt. rock, shoegaze]
Mazzy Star - Halah [alt. rock, alt. country, shoegaze, mellow]
Metallica - Stone Cold Crazy [metal]
Morrissey - Every Day is Like Sunday [alt. rock, pop]
Nirvana - Dive [grunge, alt. rock]
Nirvana - Sliver [grunge, alt. rock]
Pantera - Cemetery Gates [metal, hard rock]
Prong - Third From The Sun [alt. rock, metal]
Ride - Drive Blind [shoegaze, alt. rock]
Sisters of Mercy - I Was Wrong [goth rock]
Sisters of Mercy - When You Donā€™t See Me [goth rock]
Slaughter - Fly to the Angels [hair metal, power ballad]
Slowdive - Avalyn II [shoegaze, alt. rock]
Social Distortion - Story of My Life [alt. rock, hard rock]
Soda Stereo - CanciĆ³n Animal [synthpop, pop]
The Church - Metropolis [alt. rock, goth rock]

And here's my choice for current fave song of 1990:

* Bob Mould - Stop Your Crying * [alt. rock, hard rock]

So, what are YOUR picks for 1990?? šŸŽ§ļø

It's been a while since I did one of these, but I managed to get some time to plow through what is arguably one of the most influential years in my musical journey.

I turned 13 in 1991, and almost simultaneously Grunge music became a thing. Definitely still has reverberations with my tastes to this day. That said, there's a lot of stuff on this list that I discovered retroactively and now wonder if 13 year old me would've liked, or likely hated.

Most of these songs would've been utterly unfamiliar to me at the time.

Anyway, here's my runner-ups:

Blur - Thereā€™s No Other Way
Chapterhouse - Pearl
Front 242 - Gripped By Fear
Guns nā€™ Roses - Knockinā€™ On Heavenā€™s Door
Jesus Jones - Right Here, Right Now
Material Issue - Diane
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
Metallica - The Unforgiven
Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod
My Bloody Valentine - Soon
Nirvana - Lounge Act
Orbital - Satan
Pearl Jam - Black
Pearl Jam - Garden
Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses
School of Fish - 3 Strange Days
Seal - Crazy
Soundgarden - Holy Water
Talk Talk - Ascension Day
The Fixx - How Much Is Enough
The KLF - 3 A.M. Eternal
The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds
The Psychedelic Furs - Until She Comes
The Smithereens - Top Of The Pops
Toad The Wet Sprocket - All I Want
Wolfsheim - The Sparrows and the Nightingales

And my (current?) favorite song of 1991:

*Talk Talk - After The Flood*

So what are y'alls favorite songs of 1991?

Having now done the full 1980s, time to maybe skip around a bit and cover some years more haphazardly.

My mom was a big fan of Motown and British Invasion stuff, and as such I grew up hearing a lot of those genres. Later in life I have also come to enjoy the psychedelic rock and garage rock of the late 60s ā€” they are the early influences of a lot of more recent artists I listen to.

So, here are my list of runner-ups for favorite song of 1966.

? and the Mysterians - 96 Tears
13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me
Buffalo Springfield - For What Itā€™s Worth
Donovan - Season of the Witch
Four Tops - Standing In The Shadows Of Love
Los Bravos - Black is Black
Paul Revere & The Raiders - Iā€™m Not Your Steppinā€™ Stone
Simon & Garfunkel - I Am A Rock
Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
The Animals - Donā€™t Bring Me Down
The Association - Along Comes Mary
The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
The Beatles - Taxman
The Beatles - Tomorrow never Knows
The Capitols - Cool Jerk
The Cyrkle - Red Rubber Ball
The Easybeats - Friday On My Mind
The Monkees - Last Train To Clarksville
The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black
The Rolling Stones - Under My Thumb
The Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovinā€™
Velvet Underground - Femme Fatale
Steve Wonder - Uptight (Everythingā€™s Alright)
The Lovinā€™ Spoonful - Summer in the City
The Standells - Dirty Water
Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs - Little Red Riding Hood
The Supremes - You Keep Me Hanginā€™ On

And the winner for favorite song of #1966 is... šŸ„

Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Comin'

I was šŸ¤ close to going with the 13th floor elevators, but Sam & Dave just sounds more appealing to me at the moment. šŸ˜

Soul II Soul - Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)
The Call - Let the Day Begin

And the winner is... šŸ„

The Jesus & Mary Chain - Head On

Definitely a lot of nostalgia based contenders here, since I'm pretty sure '89 is when I really hit my stride of actually paying attention to pop music. The Jesus & Mary Chain are definitely of the "found it later in life" variety. 11 year old me was too busy listening to Roxette to be aware of TJAMC.

I gues this wraps it up for the 80s! Maybe time to jump around in the timeline a bit. šŸ¤”

For anyone new to this exercise, these are my current favorite songs released in #1986.

The runner-ups:

Bon Jovi - Raise Your Hands
Nu Shooz - I Canā€™t Wait

The Smithereens - Behind The Wall Of Sleep

Lots of poppy things on my '86 list. Weird (for me, anyway).

I feel bad that I keep overlooking Talk Talk for favorite song, but honestly I don't listen to just one Talk Talk song. I listen to full TT albums. Maybe if I ever do a Favorite Album by Year list it'll change things. Dramatically, I expect.

The runners-up...

Strange Advance - We Run

So many amazing albums in '85. Also can definitely see my "off the beaten path" tastes peeking through on here. I suspect by the time we get to the mid 90s it's gonna be a list of head-scratchers for all but the most devoted music aficionados.

I find it's hard to remember this is a list of "favorites" rather than just "important" or "interesting" songs. This list would be out of control if I didn't have that filter in mind. šŸ¤£

For reference, my previous 1980 post: gladtech.social/@skullvalanche

I guess I should clarify, this list is my *current* favorite song from each year. *Not* the song that was my favorite during that year.

Moving along, it's time for #1981!

The contenders:

Duran Duran - Planet Earth
Oingo Boingo - Only A Lad
The Cars - Since Youā€™re Gone
The Stranglers - Golden Brown
Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself
Simple Minds - The American
Haircut One Hundred - Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)

Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe

And the winner is... šŸ„

Psychedelic Furs - Pretty in Pink

I was kinda shocked to discover that "Dancing With Myself" was as old as it is. Ditto for "In The Air Tonight".

So, what's your pick for 1981? (Doesn't have to be on this list)

My coworker maintains a list of his favorite song from every year, starting with the mid 1950s, which inspired me.

Turns out it's *really hard* to pick just one song from a given year. I've been doing tons of research, sifting through the bulk of the album releases for every year, then skimming over the songs on those albums to pick out contenders for "favorite" and then finally just picking one and immediately feeling like I chose wrong. šŸ¤£

I started with #1980. I may go back earlier someday, but '80 seemed like a good place to start.

The contenders:

Loverboy - Turn Me Loose
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
OMD - Electricity
Devo - Gates of Steel
Bowie - Ashes to Ashes
Split Enz - I got you
Killing Joke - The Wait
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Judas Priest - Metal Gods
Comsat Angels - Independence Day
Ozzy Ozbourne - Crazy Train
The Misfits - Last Caress
The Cure - Boys Donā€™t Cry
The Cure - Fire In Cairo
The Teardrop Explodes - Reward
Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall, Part II
Billy Joel - It's Still Rock and Roll to Me
Donnie Iris - Ah! Leah!

Ultimately, I went with... šŸ„

AC/DC - Hells Bells

Which kinda surprised me, to be honest. I'm not that big of an AC/DC fan, but I do really love the intro to Hells Bells.
