Oh hey, another reminder for newbies to (or anybody really): if you "favorite" a post it makes the author of the post feel good, but doesn't have any impact on the post's visibility (unlike on that other site). What's important on Mastodon is !

liberally-- it increases the visibility of the post you're boosting AND increases the visibility of your entire instance.

( is still good too!)

@noondlyt @feditips how should we be using the function?

and the same seems to be a good way to spam up a highly followed user - I try not to do that to large accounts.

I think I usually use it in comment sections.

Users too quickly dismiss the value of a status on . Honestly i think it's kind of revolutionary.

True there's no algorithm to make Favorited posts more visible, but those numbers mean "someone likes this".

That way Favorites make kind requests for more posts like this. It's up to _us_ to form communities that honor & reciprocate that kindness by taking to heart what people respond to. That way we replace the cruel indifference of algorithms with the caring humanity of .

If we were playing , ...

Let's play !

Play (I See What You're Saying) with me. I will toot an image. To you, that image may ask a that needs an or , or it may evoke a in you. Then you reply with an image that shows that.

If you include these instructions and boost, then others can reply to your image with their own.

If you like ISWYS, then this post instead of it.

Here's my reply...

So far, here’s what I understand the least about , & I have honest questions.

I get the a doesn’t boost that content’s visibility on the platform, but is it okay to use it to be like, “hey, I like what ya posted” without a or ?

Does favoriting something without reposting send an unspoken message of disingenuous support?

Has there been a general vibe or trend of “comment, repost, or move on”?

Honestly asking. I want to show respect as a newb here.

Just a reminder to all newcomers. If you think something should have more visibility, it! We have no algorithms here.

Edit: To clarify, does nothing. Think of favoriting as a marker that only matters to you. It doesn't affect others in any way except that they may occasionally see what you favorite.

@bob_some_ale @jentaub I am, alas, not @jentaub, but just tells the author you like their post. There is no algorithm that broadcasts “likes.” shares the post with the people who follow you and helps share it with a wider audience. The other way to do that is with the use of , because anyone who follows the hashtag will see the post on their federated feed. By design, people can share ideas without bots and algorithms’ provocation.
