#bookmarks are for when you want to privately save something for later, and not notify the person who wrote it.

#favourites are for when you want to publicly like something. The author gets notified.

I favourite often and bookmark occasionally. (And used British spelling for cross-Atlantic congeniality.)

#lists are for categorizing the people you follow. When you add someone to one of your lists, they do not get notified.

I made a little free web app called Listodon that tells you if there's anyone you're following who you have not yet added to a list. You can run it periodically to re-check. https://listodon.pages.dev/

I need some #mastodonhelp! I'm three days into Mastodon and I can't find any documentation that tells me the differences between #bookmarks and #favourites and when you'd want to use one rather than the other. Nor can I find #lists documented. I ask as I'm receiving norifications about others who have "favourited your status".

Every time I write that a character blinked, I wince and change it and I blame you, Rocky Flintstone and every last one of your DREADFUL Belinda Blinked “novels”.

Another great feature in apps like #Megalodon and #Fedilabs is the ability to hide replies in timelines.

This promotes the feature of #threads. Because you only see the original top post and no posts out of context. So if you see a post and you are interested in the content and replies, you can click on it and go down the tree of comments. This is way better on #Mastodon than #Twitter.

I really like the idea of threads here on Mastodon. It allows for an idea based conversation, where every post is a single topic but is tied together to a larger conversation by the top post.

The problem, however, with these #timelines that aren't governed by some algorithm, is that you can easily see the same post over and over.

I follow a few accounts that are interconnected with each other. We all interact with the same content. So when they all #boost a post, I see the original and 5 #boosts.

This is, however, fixed with clients, allowing me to hide boosts from my timelines. Which isn't the best solution. We should rather be allowed to hide boosts of accounts we already follow because I've already seen that post or eventually will in my timeline.

I've actually thought about it a lot. I want to see the posts that people that I follow #favorite. I want to see what they are up to and doing.

But if we allow this, it goes against the principle that #boosts are for you and #favorites for the original poster.

If the people that I follow want me to see something, they would reply to a post or boost it.

With #Mastodon not sorting our timelines by favorite count and number of boosts, I actually see all of the posts of people I follow and content doesn't get lost, and I love it.

#Twitter, on the other hand, has a problem with #retweets and #likes. People don't use them correctly and often use both.

This paired with the #algorithm leads to a few #tweets being spammed across the entire site and other posts getting lost in the ocean of tweets.

My experience on Twitter over 10 years had far less interaction than my 3 months on #Mastodon.

On Twitter, my posts just disolved into nothing, where I now get many #favorites and #boosts on all my posts.

I also get replies and interaction here because people actually see my content and aren't obsessed with one or two celebrity accounts.

The thing is. On #Mastodon, #boosts are a way to spread what someone else said, either because you agree or want to share it with your followers.

It also helps grow the organic graph of the #fediverse and help differnt #instances to flow over into each other and connect and grow.

#Favourites, on the other hand, is a way to acknowledge the original poster and give them recognition for their post and content. Either because you agree or enjoy the content.

Further weakness in #whalebird - doesn't view threads very readily, doesn't update the thread you're viewing when you add to it.

And.. search for #fediverse handles offers many irrelevant ones b4 homing in on the one you actually wanted, bcos you follow them but couldn't be bothered to go to your 'follows' list to find their handle. The standard Mastodon UI is much better at this.

The biggest (?) #mastodon weakness is (?) Favourites. C'mon somebody, give us tools to manage #favourites nicely

Some that I had in mind

- I thought about feature the top post for #favourites and #boosts after every week or month
- #hashtags that should automatically be added to posts after #boosting
- A help #bot that you can message and request to turn certain features like #DMs on an off
