The #FeastoftheAss is the highlight of the year, but we are blessed with many #donkey commemorations in the annual #Asstodon cycle, and Palm Sunday is next in line!

There was a 1980s Anglican book of Easter liturgical advice which seriously warned clergy not to use an 'empty donkey' in a Palm Sunday procession: "It gives out the wrong message and the event can become all about the donkey."

Well, right there! 🙂

Two boosts coming for #FeastOfTheAss #Asstodon

In honor of the #FeastOfTheAss let us celebrate these old pictures c. 1930 I found in a cache of old family history. My father’s family was very poor, living and working as sharecroppers in middle Georgia. What amazes me is that in light of the scarcity of resources, and the very few photographs that were taken at all, that they would take pictures of the donkey. The little boy behind the plow is my father’s oldest brother. Labeled: “Mule at Harper Tucker Place.” #Asstodon

Thank you for this! An excellent gift for today's #FeastoftheAss and I'll share it also with my equine vet who is visiting on Monday. I am fascinated by the history and culture of man's interaction with donkeys. The ancient roots are an exciting topic.

The Holy Family's 'flight into Egypt' was a popular subject for the Romanesque stone masons of France, always with a central role for the donkey, as shown here in an example from a pillar capital in Autun cathedral.

The symbolism of the journey became an obvious theme in medieval pilgrimage and such depictions of the flight into Egypt can be seen all along the pilgrim roads to Santiago de Compostela.
