Had to implement feature flags in a Laravel codebase. I thought I'd give Pennant a try as it is part of Laravel 10 - a bit overcomplicated for my needs at present but this blog post helped to use it for simple global flags https://elliotderhay.com/blog/how-to-make-laravel-pennant-features-that-apply-globally

I believe #featureFlags (as implemented with services like #launchDarkly) are an #antiPattern; they are just a second set of #environmentVariables that need to be tested against. Just use env vars. Too many? There's your problem! #12factor

Gave my first talk since The Pancake last night - an intro to #featureflags and #OpenFeature.
A small crowd, but lovely and very engaged! It feels like feature flagging is a perennially interesting topic - most teams are doing it, most are looking for ways to get better at it.
I did a walkthrough of#OpenFeature with #cloudnativeislamabad https://www.youtube.com/live/C19YGf0t-2g where I show #kubernetes native #featureflags

Do you use #featureflags ? With #openfeature it is a one-line change to switch from in-house to vendor. OpenFeature is tightly integrated with #opentelemetry so everything is #observable by default. https://docs.openfeature.dev for more info

blurghed: what makes client-side #FeatureFlags different from server-side, and how we're extending the #openfeature API to support client-side flags:
https://docs.openfeature.dev/blog/catering-to-the-client-side/
TL;DR:
1) on the server-side the evaluation context for flagging decisions is highly dynamic (each request is for a different user), vs client-side where it's *mostly* static.
2) on the client, feature flag evaluation is expensive/slow.
This means on the client flags are typically pre-evaluated ahead of decision time
Curious: are you using #featureflags ? Is it “only” for #userbehaviour / #performance reasons? Anyone using them for #security use cases?

Are you:
1) an experienced pythonista
2) excited about feature flagging
3) excited about open source
if so, I might have an interesting project for you...

Deleting a feature flag and the code after releasing is a nice feeling of accomplishment.
Why are #FeatureFlags my preferred release approach?
1. Decouple deployment from releasing.
👉 Improving the #4keymetrics
👉 Allows #trunkbaseddevelopment
2. Releasing is less tense as rolling back is one click away
3. Able to test in production for a set of users instead on staging environments that bring a false sense of safety
#featureflags #4keymetrics #trunkbaseddevelopment
We are under one of those API migrations with a new DB schema that is just not that easy to migrate.
Backward compatibility is necessary.
Smooth deployment as well.
Here #FeatureFlags help a lot.
Let's see how the week end!!
