Claudia Jones was born in 1915 in Trinidad. After moving to the US, she became active in the Communist Party, fighting for women’s equality and writing analyses of Marxism that were a precursor to modern intersectionality discourse. The US deported her for her activities, but she continued organizing in the UK, founding the West Indian Gazette and the first Caribbean Carnival.
