Robert F. Williams was born in 1925. As the chapter president of the Monroe NAACP, he desegregated the local library and swimming pool. He fled the US to escape bogus kidnapping charges. While in Cuba he started publishing “The Crusader” newspaper and wrote “Negroes With Guns”, a book whose themes of armed self-defense influenced Huey Newton and the Black Panthers.
