This became new to me back in December.

Also look at the #Explore and #Federated feeds. People will post on just about anything. You'd be surprised at what people are interested in.

Really, really impressed that replying to a @pixelfed post with images from @Mastodon works fine - and the images show fine on the official app, even though from #Pixelfed itself replies can't have images!

And that edits show up too. #OpenStandards based federation FTW!

Searching for a federated communications software with closed groups.

Hey,
I just talked to an activist friend and he told me about the struggles to find the right communications software for his activist group.
He said that no software is really end to end encrypted for large group chats and calls. (Is that true?)

So he is searching for something instead where the metadata is hidden and which is federated.
He was asking me if #Mastodon was the right thing, but Mastodon doesn't have groups yet. (When?)

So I suggested #Lemmy, but Lemmy doesn't have hidden/closed communities, right?

So what else is there?

Okay, this is pretty cool. I added a Netdata dashboard to my Lemmy instance https://apollo.town recently, and I just discovered I can embed little badges into sites with a few metrics.

Now our sidebar shows ping time to other instances so you can see if federation is working OK. Neat!

If you're saying the general public should stop relying on #centralized, #private walled-garden #services and instead use #open, #federated #protocols and #services operated in a community-owned-and-operated way, then I am 10^6 percent behind you.

How you translate that into getting your friends off #Twitter or your grandparents off #Facebook is an entirely different problem, which may not be soluble.
