"When newer systems and tools confound those expectations, people get, at best, confused. At worst, they try to walk across a solid-looking but sink-into-able surface and get stuck in a bog, while stilt-walking locals familiar with the marshy ground cluster around to chide them for acting like—well, water bugs, maybe."

"The results show that software articles
are the most cited resource for software, while direct software citations are
better suited for identification of software versions. Moreover, we found current
practices by both, publishers and bibliographic databases, to be unsuited to
represent these direct software citations, hindering large-scale analyses such
as assessing software impact"

For scientists submitting their papers to journals, there’s an all-too-familiar drill: spend hours formatting the paper to meet the journal’s guidelines; if the paper is rejected, sink more time into reformatting it for another journal...

An analysis has put a price tag on all that busy work: US$230 million worth of time was wasted by scientists worldwide reformatting papers sent to biomedical journals in 2021 alone.

With thanks to @ky396@twitter.com for suggesting jofreeman.com/joreen/tyranny.h

"For everyone to have the opportunity to be involved in a given group and to participate in its activities the structure must be explicit, not implicit. The rules of decision-making must be open and available to everyone, and this can happen only if they are formalized."

"The bottom line: A large body of evidence suggests that consumption of caffeinated does not increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancers. In fact, consumption of 3 to 5 standard cups of coffee daily has been consistently associated with a reduced risk of several chronic diseases."
