The service you are actually volunteering your time to provide here is one of moderation, and creating a safe space for the people who choose your instance. The only honest way to succeed at that is by verifying reports first. If you don’t you risk feeding some random person’s ego.

Some of the most vile, and disgusting images/text I have ever seen in my life are ones I have been exposed to by **verifying all accusations** to the best of my ability.

This applies to these bullshit algorithmic fedi block lists too. Form a relationship with other admins, and independently verify for yourself all accusations against an instance before you sever network connections. Far too many people seem cool with putting people on an island without really knowing why they’re doing it. The fedi blocks are ripe with boiling ego, and high school lunchroom immaturity. You are volunteering your limited time here so make it count.

If your #Mastodon server moderation practices include things like, “you can tell from the domain name that the instance reeks of loli”, or “pretty sure I should block because all of these other instances are so why wouldn’t I” then I need you to know that you are handling the task at hand **terribly wrong**, and you should stop while you’re behind.

Step 1: Keep a very close eye on spam/suspicious signups, and the IP ranges they originated from should the only feasible solution be to block them.

Wow…been called xenophobic by 9 different people in the last 45 minutes for defederating from an instance that is blatantly allowing Russian disinformation to spread across the fediverse.

Sorry, but I’ve never been very good at arguing with stupidity. In fact, some might say it is impossible to do so.

RT is just a prime example, but if you look at the other active accounts they are all “news” outlets, and any admin that will allow RT to reside with them knows full well what they’re propping up.

There is no way I am going to preemptively decide to defederate from Meta without any reason. They haven’t even added any of their social media properties to AP yet.

I hate the behavior of Meta too, but limiting the potential growth of the fediverse because of this…I just can’t get behind that. Let them join the fediverse, and give us a reason to defederate.
