For anyone doesn't like the unaccountability of centralized blocklists like thebad.space, check out what we've been building with the fediseer https://gui.fediseer.com where we allow people to report their own like/dislike lists and then use, filter and combine lists from multiple instances for any purpose.
The trick is that there's no single list which you use or you do not. You can choose which instances you trust, and can use their lists. Or just only use your own.
Being an instance admin/mod is a position of responsibility and accountability. You owe (yes, owe) the people on your instance the assurance that your actions as a leader will be level-headed, fair, and free of personal grievances in your dealings with other instances—because your behavior with users outside of your instance gives great insight into your potential behavior inside of your instance as well.
I am begging everyone using the /#fediblock hashtag to keep it clear of personal vendettas and diatribes. It's your choice how to manage your community, but misusing fediblock, a tool for keeping Masto users and communities safe, for lashing out and revenge, flies in the face of a worthy goal and a powerful tool for good.
…people know that anyone can post anything to the fediblock tag and people use their best judgement when deciding whether to block a user or instance, right?
people will often disagree. that's why the more advanced blocklists draw from *multiple* servers' blocks and produce several versions with different tiers—like, "x out of 10 servers block these instances"—and remove list entries if they no longer meet the threshold.
there's some stuff posted on the tag that I personally don't think is block-worthy. so i ignore it and move the fuck on with my life.
Just started a lemmy community for reporting instances to block. The lemmy version of #fediblock if you will. The benefit is that it allows for concentrated discussions on the topic of that instance.
https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/fediblock
Remember you can subscribe to that instance from mastodon as well
Reminder that I've built a FOSS service to combat spam and easily collaborate, publish and combine blocks, whitelists and generically speaking approvals/disapprovals
It provides a simple REST API you can connect to automation for your instance to automatically update white/block lists, or just use it to mark content for review etc.

@scanlime No links to sketchy places, no harassment, just lots of short sentences. Maybe some duplicates? Is this a test/demo instance, for showing off? #FediBlockMeta
Uhm... Alright? Since when were spammers and spamfarms a protected minority group?
How exactly does this qualify as "hate speech"
I'm not at liberty to share where exactly this comes from but... wtf?
Thank you @fediblock for adding the message to use the #FediBlockMeta tag to start discussions!
Thank you @fediblock for adding the message to use the #FediBlockMeta tag to start discussions! A good bot :pat_potato:

Hi @oliphant
Thanks a lot for the blocklists.
Testing the instructions on https://writer.oliphant.social/oliphant/how-to-sync-up-blocklist-changes-from-trusted-sources I noticed that it will delete the private blocklist comments on my server.
Fix is in the next post. #FediBlockMeta #MastoAdmin
You know, I've seen people complaining about being yelled at for using the FediBlock tag for something that isn't a block recommendation and be told to use #FediBlockMeta instead, and I kind of get it. It's not the most efficient or fairest way to onboard people, and I can see why it would give people pause and actually make using the tag hostile to them to be told off for not keeping a norm they could not have known.
So to give people fair notice and acculturate users, what do you say to making a concentrated effort to embed information about the meta tag in FediBlock posts, say, "(Regular reminder to put new threads about # FediBlock that aren't block recommendations in the #FediBlockMeta tag! This keeps the main tag nice and usable for everyone, thank you :D)" or similar at the end?
Like probably not every post because that would be annoying on its own, but if you don't see a post in the past day or so that has mentioned this it might be useful to add on. And bots are likely great for implementing this as part of their messages. What do you think?
Me, sleeping like a baby through the unending hail of mastodon.social users being disgusting because we are long since defederated from them and don't have to do Gargron's moderation for him anymore: :blobcat_sleep:
@tinfoilhat also worth noting that the fediblock hashtag is only used for instance suggestions. talk relating to fediblock goes into #fediblockmeta
you'll have you delete and repost your toot to make the change though, editing it won't move it out of the hashtag
No more opinions under this post thank you. I frankly don't care if you think it's important to have media organizations on fedi, especially "even if it's the BBC".
Fediblock are block suggestions, not orders. Use your own judgement and deal with the consequences of that like every other admin or user. Don't agree with a fediblock post? Nobody's forcing you to act on it.
I'm going to start blocking anybody for defending one of the institutions the most responsible for the horrible rise in transphobia in the UK, mouthpiece of a genocidal state or for even suggesting their presence is acceptable.
