The goal of multilingual church is not to help integrate people into a church as it is right now but to provide a platform for the whole church to be transformed.

I am challenged that, as believers, we have to be able to tell the difference between a doctrinal issue and a salvation issue. In the parable of the sheep and the goats, Jesus shows that caring the the poor, the oppressed and the prisoners among his brothers and sisters is a salvation issue, as it shows who He really knows.
James tells us something similar in his epistle.
Do those line up with what we normally read as salvation issues?

Jesus both loved people for who they were and called for repentance. I'd like to suggest that different Christian traditions tend to favour one of those sides. But loving people without calling for repentance leaves people stuck in sin. Calling for repentance without loving people is judgmentalism.
God's kindness leads us to repentance. We need both.
The tricky question is: how can we make sure that we don't get stuck on only one side?
The book chapter I'm working on today is called "They'll all learn English anyway." It's part of my book on multilingual church. I'll be engaging with that response and asking what it says about our love for people and whether it has Biblical backing.

It is really exciting to see this episode of The Church Interpreting Podcast released. Have you ever wondered what it's like to be someone else's voice? This episode is for you.

Really rewarding to see thar, despite being down for big chunks of this month, churchinterpreting.com has had 22 visitors this month.
My immediate plans are to get my guide to AI for multilingual churches on there and to get some exercises for interpreters and more help for researchers up.
I'd love to publish articles from anyone with experience in #multilingualChurch, especially in displaying content in more than one language at once.

While I was doing research for a book proposal, I discovered that this old article of mine on the miracle of Bible translation is now open for anyone to read: https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2019/october/bible-translation-imperfect.html

"If you don't know where the holes are in your theology, it means you have bad theology.".
- Alexander Sellars Downie
That was one of my dad's favourite sayings. When I was growing up, I always thought he meant it as a signal to keep learning, keep humble, read the Word more and study more.
It's only after 25 sessions of counselling and facing my own traumas and coping mechanisms that I finally get it.
What it really means is that life is too big and too complicated for you to wrap it in a simple, easy-to-understand theology and be done with it. And God is too big for our finite, human minds to figure out and predict.
Dyed-on-the-wool cessationalists can find themselves faced with prophecy or healing or gifts of knowledge or wisdom or tongues that show that God is still acting in the gifts of the Spirit. The most positive Charismatics face trauma or hurt or tragedy.
The moment our theology is cut and dried, the moment we think we've got God figured out, real life will show us the opposite.
We can deny that and wrap our prejudices and pride round us like a blanket. We can run away from the hurt and throw away our confidence, deconstructing until we find ourselves floating around with every wind of doctrine.
Or we can follow the crucified and risen saviour, the beaten but praising apostles and the martyrs, heroes and examples who have gone before us and who show us that God never leaves us and that in this world, we will have trouble but we can take heart because Christ has overcome the world.
We don't have to understand or like every bit of the journey. But we don't need to do it alone. We can walk around with our holy, holey theologies and grow to know the One who still has a hole in His side.

So pleased to have some new connections on here. At the moment, I'm doing a research project on how churches are meeting people's language needs (or not).
If you attend or lead any size of church anywhere in the world, please do take the 5-10 minutes to fill this Google form in.

Please boost.
If you or someone you know hosts a #Christian #podcasts, specifically one aimed at #church #leaders, I'd love to be your guest to talk about #MultilingualChurch.

I actually really like a lot of modern worship music and find it often as theologically meaningful as old hymns. Just as shouldn't stereotype people based on the groups we are more comfortable with, the same goes with music.
Just because I grew up hearing it, that doesn't make it better.

This time Lauryn gets theological about the Tower of Babel, I chat about the importance of church attitudes to interpreting and language, we have an interview with a regular interpreting listener and end with a quick tip on making interpreting helpfully visible.

Hello, #fedichurch, and #theology people, I have a big request. I am currently running an independent research project on how #churches are meeting the language needs of their communities (or not).
I would be really pleased if those involved in churches as leaders or congregants or #ChurchInterpreters could fill in this 5-10 minute survey, no matter what your church is doing:
https://bit.ly/Church-Lang-Survey
(opens in a Google form)
The survey explains what will happen with the results. Results will be published and will also be used to create targeted (free!) resources for churches.
Please could you also pass it on to any churches you know. I would prefer it wasn't pushed publicly on places like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, where it could end up being stuffed by bots but Mastodon, email and stuff like Whatsapp/Telegram/Signal is totally fine.
