@jenniferplusplus I have the impression that early adopters of the #Fediverse, of which many trans people belong to, fell into the false sense of comfort that there was a stable, uniform #fediculture. But #culture is inherent to #groupdynamics & a 100k group is not the same as a 2M network. While it's paradoxical to seek to enforce a culture across the Fediverse, a network designed to SUPPORT #divergence, I think it's fair to debate whether an #LGBTQ #instance should ban the #BBC or not.

As a cultural #anthropologist, I appreciate your approach to seeing the #Fediverse as having diverse cultures. I really appreciate the even-handed tone and thoughtfulness your bring to these discussions. I am someone who came to Mastodon to get FAR, FAR, FAR away from #BigTech. I do not regret the move. I’m a newbie who is not (yet) wedded to any particular #fediculture. I find everything happening here fascinating.

I wouldn’t mind a trend to more female-identifying fedizens. 😜

#journahost, the #instance favoured by #journalists, got blocked by many #servers in frustration of this straight import culture from #birdsite & total disregard for the existing #fediculture (see list here: https://fba.ryona.agency/?domain=journa.host). Props to #investigative #journalism network @GIJN for not only reporting the story, but acknowledging there was a #fedi culture to start with.

#Mastodon features have created #fediculture coherence cross-#servers, and many #instances will uphold the #values they see in those features: self-awareness, respect, inclusivity, diversity. #Rochko was maybe keen not to scare off #birdsite arrivals, who are importing their #twitter culture en masse on #Mastodon. The UK government would have qualified this #migration as 'an invasion'. Here's why:

A 🧵: #Mastodon founder #Rochko expressed through several interviews the opinion that there was no #fediculture or #socialconvention, but it was all fluctuating depending on who the users were, and the #server rules. I'd like to add some nuance to that: the #fedi features themselves are symptoms of a culture (#cw, filters, no quote #boost...), so the tech isn't agnostic.

Looks like you're fairly new, one #fediculture tip: try not to use autoposting from Twitter, RTs are not so welcome, because they are not easily filterable. Whereas the native RT (#boosts) are, and that's important to a lot of people.

I’m seeing an awful lot of photos posted with no alt text, and hashtags not using #camelCase or #PascalCase

Please use these for #Accessibility as it’s considerate to #DisabledPeople and also benefits others (e.g. if your image has text in a foreign language, translation tools can read it; Pascal Case hashtags are more readable for everyone). The #MetaText iOS app actually prompts you to add #AltText when posting an image.

Most of them are. Many have really small monthly contributions towards the costs. In a way the latter is more in line with the #fediculture: you are not a customer, you are a participant. Your admins have names, and you can become an admin as well. mastodon.green charges 1,50 € (+VAT) per month, not exactly breaking the bank.

Loving mastodon so far but conscious that being part of the mass-migration means I'm:

A: understandably freaking-out some nevertheless welcoming locals.

B: contributing to extra work for admins. They're busy responding to the influx of filth this pop-boom was bound to attract, explaining #fediculture to the (many) who didn't google it before getting off the boat (check link in reply), & trying to keep servers going under unprecedented load.

So: huge thanks. I'm new here but can I do anything?

Everyone should have an alt, or multiple. It really solves a lot of problems!

For so many people (including me once), it never even occurs to them. It's really a mindset change that needs to happen. People are used to mindlessly filling out their (Facebook/Twitter/etc) profiles, and they become attached to this singular electronic entity, this single digital representation of them. It's a whole personality onto its own.

Multiple accounts should be commonplace. They allow you to produce different feeds with different personalities and registers of tone and content for different people, just like you would in the real world. It also exposes you to different subcultures around the network, just like how you'd explore the real world. You are complex person. I think the natural accident of federation results in this naturally better #fediculture.

There are many more good reasons, like network resiliency, proliferation of ActivityPub implementations, etc.
