#FediFetcher is a tool for #Mastodon that automatically fetches missing replies and posts from other fediverse instances, and adds them to your own Mastodon instance.

To me, the worst part about Mastodon has never been that it’s difficult to onboard. It’s that you can visit profiles and see zero posts despite there being thousands there, or replies to posts being completely invisible to your server. I’ve tried to remedy this with third party fixes, but the average consumer is never going to do that. Joining a large server should not be the default solution to these problems. Second issue is inability to port posts to a new instance.
Figured out the #fedifetcher issue I was having with the Guthub action emailing me every 7 minutes. Turns out nothing was wrong, just that the action was still running when the script tried running it again.
Hopefully this helps with some of the down sides of running a one person instance, like empty profiles and missing replies.
#FediFetcher: Mostly for your #mastoadmin, it's a program that pulls the chains off your server, watching what comes in and fetches information around that info, like post replies and saves them to your server. The other two are browser addons so of limited use for mobile users; FediFetcher is the whole deal since it's server-based. If you think your server #DB was big, just wait.

I tried #FediFetcher by @michael; it does what #mastodon is supposed to do: Downloads external post #replies & fills in your #instance making it look/act like real social media. Unsuprisingly this hits like a train, populating everything from users' home feeds ad infinitum.
This is FINE for the most part. I'd *prefer* fetch-on-demand: a user clicks a post & FediFetcher pulls and shows, but likely Mastodon needs to implement that. FediFetcher works, more than I can say of Mastodon. I'll keep it.

Trying out #fedifetcher through a #GitHub action, but keep getting an email error:
“Run cancelled: getAllRepliesToKnownPosts - main (505bcdd)”
No idea what this means.
Got FediFetcher up and running. This will hopefully put an end to the need to open remote posts on the remote server just to see all replies — an annoying problem when running a small Mastodon server.
Very promising so far, thanks @michael!

- tools wie #fedifetcher u.a.
- pseudo-relays wie #fediBuzz
Meine tiny Instanz hat 23 hits für Deinen hashtag.

I've upgraded my plan but I'm still hitting ~60%/50 GB media storage... But meanwhile, the result of my short content cache retention + #FediFetcher experiment:
1. Correctly shows that there were 1+ replies to my toot
2. Pre-#FediFetcher
3. Post-FediFetcher
4. My reply to the fetched reply is orphaned (this wasn't what I was expecting, so I'm a bit surprised 🤔)
I've reset the settings and will re-run FediFetcher again later to see if that'll fix it.
I can endorse FediFetcher. It does take some cpu which is not usually a problem on single-user or small instance.
Michael - should #Threads or some other mega instance federate will #FediFetcher be likely to overwhelm the instance? If so, would it be possible to block FediFetcher from fetching from a specific instance if users would still wish to follow/be followed/post/reply to that instance?
@shauna add hashtag relays for the shared interests. Consider adding #FediFetcher for each person until a similar feature is added to mastodon (I think it’s coming). Details in this thread https://bird.rodeo/@raygan/110017197810653950
@andy if the problem is it’s too quiet, try these tips from @raygan first. #FediFetcher is harder to do but much more payoff. It’s wonderful. Adding hashtag relays is good too, and easy. https://bird.rodeo/@raygan/110017197810653950
I use @michael's #FediFetcher to do this. You can run it as a GitHub action, server, or desktop computer. Basically, set it up and forget about it. It chugs along backfilling new follows/followers, replies to posts, and more.
@aaron I have a simple single user instance with #MastoHost. Am happy so far. I underestimated initially, so went with the smallest plan. I had to upgrade to the next plan (USD 9 a month I think?) as i was doing probably too much with #Fedifetcher and #GetMoarFediverse . But since then things are fine based on my (current) usage. I wrote a blog post here https://cdrum.com/2023/06/10/experimenting-with-a-single-user-mastodon-instance-cdrum.social/

뭔가 대체 어떻게 써야할 지 잘 모르겠는데 더 좋다는 #FediFetcher 있대요.

@leitmedium I still need to find the time to test/implement, but #FediFetcher from @michael might be your friend here.

🔸 #FediBuzz Relay @astro@c3d2.social
🔸 #FediFetcher @michael

@zephyrvs Yes highly recommend #fedifetcher. I just implemented it the other day and wrote about it here https://cdrum.com/2023/06/10/experimenting-with-a-single-user-mastodon-instance-cdrum.social
Wrote up a blog post on migrating #fedifetcher from GitHub Actions to my own infra (in my case, a Synology NAS sitting at my home). https://cdrum.com/2023/06/12/running-fedifetcher-from-a-synology-nas/ #mastoadmin #synology

The first thing I’m exploring is https://blog.thms.uk/fedifetcher #fedifetcher for my #singleuserinstance #mastodon server. I have the smallest instance size offering by @mastohost and am running Fedifetcher via the Github Actions and it’s taking forever for the initial run. (I’m only following 80 some odd accounts?) lots of time outs too. #fediadmin #mastoadmin
