Things I wish I could do in the Fediverse (but generally not so much that I want to lobby for them):

* delegate authority such that specific other users have the ability to edit my posts (use case: proofreading)
* easily share my blocklist, mute list, & private notes on other users with specific other users
* view, in aggregate, the private notes I've made on others' profiles
* while looking at a specific post, simultaneously block user & put link to post in my private note about them

On one hand, I do want Mastodon to have better discoverability as it obviously makes finding interesting content easier.

On the other hand, I would like to avoid anything that could be used to recreate Twitter/X's "main character culture" (i.e. deliberately misinterpreting posts in order to pick fights with other users).

We'll wait and see I guess.

I noticed that the announcement of full text search in Mastodon version 4.2 is having a bit of a mixed reception.

One camp is excited for the feature and thinks it is an important step in improving discoverability on Mastodon.

The other camp finds the news of this feature being implemented infuriating/horrifying. They view full text search as a key component in amplifying spam/harassment (along with quote posts and an algorithm based feed).

I have seen the blog post by jwz about changes they want for Mastodon (and by extension the Fediverse). From what I gather, the features/changes they want are as follows:

-Proper blocking: They want the "Block" function to ensure that they can't see the blocked user's posts at all as well as ensure that the blocked user can't find a loophole to still interact with their posts.

#fedimeta It would be very nice if fedi servers did also relay activities, for posts on my timeline, like boosts and favs from servers mine doesn't know about so I have at least more replies to posts in my timeline. Something like "Hey for this post I sent you earlier, somebody just boosted it".

In fact, I find replies stats very interesting as I don't have to always open original post page to look for answers. I would justy trust the reply count under each post.

Certainly, Eugen isn't worried about #Meta #Threads; it has no influence over your privacy or experience.

But this is correct only from a technical point of view, and from the view of individual users and communities.

I think a lot of us are worried that, given Meta's track record, Threads will exert a social influence on the network as a whole, or strand its users in a walled garden in the future.

Look.

People are still on Twitter. People are going to stay on Twitter until they have a good reason to leave, one that they see as a good reason. There's been a lot of discourse about what we can do to get them to switch, and while we might come up with reasons that are compelling to ourselves, anybody who's been in a forum in the midst of some great controversy (say, Low End Talk when it was revealed to be a ColoCrossing property, or any of the angsty HackForums clones when some issue with a very verbose member or the administration inevitably fucks something up) knows you are going to lose some people, not just in not knowing the new place exists, but also in that maybe they want something new, but maybe not so stringent in their views in things.

Maybe things truly are better here, maybe things can improve, maybe it's Maybelline. Whatever the case, I think it's fair to point out that there are people who think the fediverse has failed, people that I wholeheartedly believe would be better off here. But they have to be the ones to make the decision themselves to come here on their own. All we really can do is remind them subtly that we still exist here, and to continue to be kind to each other, continue to reject hate, and continue to welcome the noobs into the fold when they do make the decision.

And maybe fight for a union, because god damn working conditions in the US suck.

After running my personal instance on a VPS since Nov 2022 and watching the network throughput and disk space used, I'm considering** hosting on a RasPi on my desk.

My 4G connection should handle the traffic and I'll have *much* more storage available. If needed, I can set up a dedicated 4G router for the instance.

**considering: not committing yet, have plenty of other things to tackle, but the urge to follow through is rising.

Is mastodon.social commonly blocked? I really thought I saw things about poor moderation, but maybe that's old, because I can't find it now. Yes, I'm aware it one of the official instances.

I would like a what is federated with what graph, I'll bet that could be made with pretty coloured blops. I also think someone (who is not me) could work out how to automate updating it, rather than manually reading through #FediMeta
