There's a solution to get beyond the invisible walls. Imperfect but here we go:

Type this into the search box (without spaces)

@ tag-$tagname @ relay.fedi.buzz

E.g. using dnd as the tag name.
@tag-dnd

Works fine

But it doesn't work for:
@tag-a5e

Like gup.pe groups this is a discovery tool. It grabs info from "out of network" I.e. servers that no one is following.

When I really started using Mastodon in Nov 2022 I was a bit mystified by the hostile attitudes towards the idea of #Search. I've since come around to appreciate the importance of informed consent.

Given that, it seems the next step should be to build per-toot, per-user, and per-instance consent into the software: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/23808 (thanks @vyr!)

Maybe its a stupid question, why isnt there a centralised search implemented in mastodon like fedisearch @Gargron?

Such a centralised search could be hosted by a independent entity and paid via donations. Every instance could decide if it wants to be part of.

At the moment this isn’t opt-in so if you prefer to have your posts unsearchable you have to set them Unlisted. Keep in mind that by doing this they won’t even appear on the local and federated timelines.

(I’m not arguing for or against search features, just giving information)

#asPublic uses the streaming API of servers you federate with to collect posts.

It does not appear in logs, and the only way to block it is to only federate with instances that disable the streaming API.
