Arguably, of some 3 million new users in November-December, 2 million were still active a month later. That would be a new user retention some *four times* higher than Twitter's on Android (16 %), as we just learnt from Similarweb.

I knew that #Mastodon is big in #Japan but mstdn.jp activity figures are wild.

Since November it's stable around 400k registered users, most of which go inactive for months at a time. But in the past 4 days, 200k of them returned active. That would account for half of the increase in MAU as measured by @fediverse.

Is this just the effect of word of mouth off-fediverse?

For the past 39 days, there's been a mean of 36,900 new accounts per day (standard deviation of ~6,000) [1]. This is incredibly steady - maybe something like #homeostasis in the growth rate? Looking at the plot [2], it looks like there have been two plateaus - three weeks at around 40k/day, three weeks a bit above 30k/day.

One million/month looks sustainable.

@fediverse The #fediverse MAU figures are quite constant these days. This suggests the retention of users who joined 1 month ago was better than with some previous waves. Or we have an exact substitution by new registrations in the past month. Any ideas which, @hildabast?
