The recording of Dr Bergström's #FemQuantSeminar last week, "Not a perfect match. Using digital data to observe gender dynamics in heterosexual dating", is now available to watch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFytYBB-Bx0
This is the end of Dr Bergström's presentation and our thread as well.
On behalf of #FemQuant we thank her for presenting this fascinating research to us in today's #FemQuantSeminar.
If you missed it, stay tuned, we will post a recording on our YouTube channel soon: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXuvJ4oKg3cqkQThoosO7kQ

Dr Bergström concludes her presentation by highlighting that we can learn new things about the process of dating from apps (matching process & preferences).
Different types of data are needed to better understand the blind spots of survey research, even if these data aren't representative.
To sum up: heterosexual couples are not a perfect match, but a compromise of different preferences.
Next, she discusses observed behaviour. We observe a gendered difference that is opposite for men and women and crosses over in late 30s: younger women prefer older partners, but the trend reverses later, whereas younger women prefer older partner, but the trend reverses later in the life course.
Thus, preferences are different, and the observed age gap is a compromise (in favor of the male preference, though).
She explains that in France, using the survey data, 79% of men open to having an older partner, but only 53% of women. This trend is even stronger among young people.
Online dating data shows stated age preferences (profile) and demonstrated age preference (behaviour).
Stated preference: women in 20s prefer older partners, but changes esp for those aged 40+; men's behaviour mirrors this (they seek younger women, unlike stated in surveys).
Next, she discusses the key gender dynamics in heterosexual dating.
One important aspect is the age gap of the couple: in almost all societies on average men tend to be older than their female partners, but what is the gendered pattern behind this observation?
Dr Bergström uses a survey, anonymised dating app profile data and dating app message metadata to explore this.
Online dating answers these issues according to Dr Bergström, as we observe the process of dating: partner selection and rejection, we observe behaviour directly, and in a longitudinal, more dynamic manner.
Dr Bergström highlights traditional data sources (eg surveys) can be used to study people in unions and some aspects of couple formation, but it only focuses on existing couples rather than the process of choosing a partner itself.
In addition, this is problematic empirically (choice does not always = preference); methodologically (indusing individual preference from a group); and theoretically (our theoretical models don't always reflect real preferences).
Her data comes from specifcially and explicitly dating-focused digital platforms.
Dr Bergström shows that the number of adults using such platforms is increasing rapidly in Europe and the US, but there are important differences in the levels between countries.
Nevertheless, it hasn't completely taken over other ways of meeting a partner.
Dr Bergström uses dating app data to explore the gendered aspects of heterosexual dating.
One of the aspects of her research is asking what can we find out about the topic specifically using dating app data rather than more traditional sources and whether it changes our understanding of it.
Soon Marie Bergström will present ‘Not a perfect match. Using digital data to observe gender dynamics in heterosexual dating’. See below for a live thread reporting the key points of the presentation 🧵 👇
📣Reminder! 📣There's still time to register for this week's #FemQuantSeminar.
