Looking for advice (and more people on Mastodon!) -- does anyone have any advice in getting better at "whole-picture" instinct? (I guess this question goes out to my and people)

I find that one of my big weaknesses is that I tunnel-vision onto the torso and when things are happening quickly I basically forget that arms are a valid target (I only fence epee). Which means my instinct always makes me go in too deep for a hit and my opponent will usually beat me to the punch by getting me on the arm.

Is there a good way to train oneself to avoid over-tunnelvisioning in combat sports?

People sometimes find it strange why I'm so passionate about international sports competitions (, ). First, I like the . I was a in high school - the Olympics were often the only opportunity I had to see my sport on TV. There are so many great sports out there beyond what we normally see in the US! It's why I try to expose my students to these sports as well - they can't all play basketball and football...
