The Orkney islands are to test two electric ferries for commuting between its outlying islands as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions from shipping.
The battery-powered hydrofoil ferries, whose hulls are raised above the water, are part of a three-year, £15.5m demonstration project funded by the UK government, due to start in March 2024.

No casualties, no boat, police, ambulance and emergency at the pier, and the crew on the ferry handled the situation as champs. Cue, random dude in the newspaper, telling ho HE saw the collision, alerted the crew, AND helped with the lifeboat. I’m not saying he’s lying. I just did not see him from where I was sitting. Next to the hatch where the rescue went under way. Prob true though. #norway #ferry

Eventually most take the hint and either use a #car, or at least get a #bus ticket. Foot passage seems to be provided under sufferance.

Most ferries travel relatively short distances, but this vessels route is a very different proposition.
ML Freyja makes a call at Harwich once every 9 or 10 days, while making a major round trip including calls at Cuxhaven, Paldiski, Turku, Bremerhaven, and Rotterdam and Rozenburg before returning to the UK.
