Well I think rather is a permanent part of that portion of the British establishment that achieves elite status for reasons unrelated to any sort of merit - a long term sickness as distinct from the short term near-fatal fever that is the current bout of

In essence we retain fealty that sits oddly with democracy - and the huge cost of the Windsors is totally unjustifiable

I can't help thinking (musing aloud, again!) that we may be seeing the start of a change in the way we live, away from the isolated family households we've lived in for the past couple of centuries, and back to a form of communal living based around a resource, whether physical (land, water, materials) or technological (knowledge, production, manufacturing) that was pretty much the model for the past couple of millennia.

This may well be the only way that a few of us may survive the climate and extinction crisis that we're likely to see over the next couple of centuries.

Unfortunately, it's likely to lead to a very hierarchical structure, a small-scale version of what we have now at country-scale.

Good grief I hate the ‘Honours’ system, and now more than ever.

More corrupt every year, the usual handful of populist sops to the plebs to keep them onside while the flunkies get rewarded in their hundreds. ‘Your Lordship?’ Fuck off.

The only actual honour is in refusing to accept one.

@Josiah_Mannion exactly. The notion that is "good" requires us to discard all the evil it enables, sponsors and even requires. It like ancient Romans declaring their is the best thing ever for humanity. Or lords.
Also, saying that "capitalism is only an economic system" is a straw man argument to distract us from discussing ethics, moral, social and ecological values which should be part of any acceptable economic theory.

Glad you included a section on why should ♻️

Perhaps you could also include that is not a system like so clout and power flexes are kind of a turn-off.

And as you mentioned, there's no here spoon-feeding safe topics.

Australia, US, UK,

3 supposed democracies which relied on a dynamic equilibrium between 2 parties to keep whichever one is in government in check, from becoming autocratic.

3 nations whose media are overwhelmingly controlled by Rupert Murdoch, Australia almost totally.

3 nations where both major political parties are owned by the same globally operative oligarchs.

3 nations in which the party of the left, of the people, suddenly sold out to a burgeoning fascist Neoliberal movement in the 1970s & early 80s.

In America it was Democrat Jimmy Carter, in the UK, Labour's James Callaghan, now Baron Callaghan of Cardiff. In Australia the very actively socialist government of Labor's Gough Whitlam had been implementing progressive moves from 1972, when in 1975 a bloodless coup involving at least Buckingham Palace threw them out in favour of the reactionaries. When Labor returned to power in 1983 under PM Bob Hawke & Treasurer Paul Keating it was secretly Neoliberal, but under the guise of "economic rationalism", not as a title but just as an Orwellian description for their Neoliberal actions.

In all 3 nations the original supposedly left instigators of Neoliberalism eventually turned over power to radical right wing leaders, in the US Reagan, in Britain Thatcher & in Oz Howard who each ran with the opportunity to destroy their nations for the sake of their oligarch owners, wannabe feudal overlords who owned both parties in each nation equally. From that time onwards, there has been effectively one party in each nation. Still having two structures & still pretending opposition to each other, but for all effective purposes one ruling body.

The cleverest part about all this brings in the oligarchs' propagandist again, Rupert Murdoch. In order to hide the fact that the supposed left, supposed opposition, was actively supportive of what the Neoliberals were doing, destroying the nation, bringing in draconian police state laws etc, the media swamped & continues to swamp, even when the Labor party has assumed power, the people with the Big Lie that they hated Labor so everyone would think that there was still opposition & hence democracy.

This situation could go on forever, without them ever needing an overt coup to replace government with an Oligarchal Junta.

It appears that you can in fact fool at least 90% of the people 100% of the time.

At this point, I think “.01% of bitcoin holders hold 27% of all bitcoin” should be included in every single article that’s ever written about it. To me, it has to be the starting point for any discussion about . is not populist. It is .
