I always loved the "chocolate-covered banana and integration of European currency systems" formulation. As you (quite correctly) point out, the obvious unconnectedness of the one with the other is the most fundamental aspect of the problem, and calling it "XY" loses that.

It doesn't beat finding a degree thesis on a subject, excitedly starting to read it thinking that it's going to be someone else's independent research on the subject to add to your knowledge, and coming to the depressing realization that it's a straight copy of a slightly older version of your own WWW page on that very subject.

I've long since lost track of the thesis. I never bookmarked it. I could have made a fair case for the degree being awarded to me. (-:
