Another excerpt. Cody doesn't have psychosis, but I think most people who've gone through intense depression can attest to how real those thoughts feel.
He walked over to the door, taking a step out into the blustery cold. The fur of his nap bristled and fluffed, but he only felt the cold seep in after a moment standing there. “To think my ancestors probably just curled up in the snow in weather like this,” Cody mused with a dry chuckle.
Thoughts swirled in his mind as he looked towards the black clouds above. Abandoned. Ejected. Hated. He looked down into his coffee, as if for something else. No words came.
‘Selfish.’ ‘After all he did for you.’ The coyote practically stumbled back, leaning against the wall. “Stop it…” he whispered to the empty lot before him.
‘What made you think this would be different? What made you think this would work out?’
“Because I loved him,” the coyote choked, his throat tight. “Stop…”
‘You loved the idea of him. You loved the idea of being cared about, of being important to someone, why would—’
“I SAID FUCKING STOP!” Cody shouted, as salty ice formed below his eyes. “Fucking fuck off!” His voice didn’t even echo in the snow, as the thoughts quieted, leaving him panting, and shaking. “Fuck,” he said, much more quietly, wiping his face on his coat with a sniff before turning back inside. Away from the cold. Away from even colder thoughts.
I don't think I handled this block exactly like I wanted to, but it felt like it matched dark thoughts from my past.

I've started my blog of "A Visit to San Sibilia", titled "The Map". I'll be posting on a not-quite-daily schedule, which is to say, whenever I have a free evening and can transcribe an entry. You can follow it here, which currently contains some background and the first entry:
https://text.tchncs.de/the-map/
But I'll also be posting links to each new entry as I go along.

This is a really, really good article about using "promise words" in the opening chapter of your novel. These are words that cue readers into what kind of story and tone you are going to offer in the following pages. What promise words are using to let your readers know that they've picked up the right book?

Would folks on here be interested in reading my "A Visit to San Sibilia" game, that I'm wrapping up soon? (It's a solo journaling RPG where you write a new entry each day from randomized prompts.)
As a story it meanders a bit, because of the nature of the randomized prompts, but now I think it's finally coming to something kind of interesting.
I'm sure there's some federated blogging software I could use to wrangle it onto the Fediverse.
Boosts welcome.
So... yeah. Starting over. It's fine.

Avoid anticlimactic endings.
(It was only a dream/a game/ simulation.)
They leave readers disappointed.
Instead, give readers something more

A CHANCE MEETING AT THE BEACH HAS CONSEQUENCES:
“You have to wonder, don’t you?.
“What do you mean. Have to wonder about what?”.
“About some of the things people claim that they do for a living.”
“Such as?”.
“Well, I was at Parkie the other day and this car pulls up and three people get out and two of them take their boards and head off into the swell but this other one just stands there. So we get to talking and she tells me that she teaches people how to declutter their homes. Ever heard anything so unlikely in your life?”.
“Nah… not really.”
“That’s not all. Let me tell you about it.”
So the conversation went that day on the coast. The kicker, though, was what happened after meeting this declutterer woman.

Rayne's Writing Tip:
Rayne Hall's Writing Tip:
Don't open your story with an extreme
character emotion (such as panic or
despair), because this would
leave nothing to build up to.
Instead, give the character
a milder version of the emotion,
e.g. dread or worry.

LIFE IMAGINED AS FICTION…
Decisions. They can be easy. They can be difficult. Sometimes, they are solved by calling upon ancient philosophies.
That is what this woman did in this short fiction I wrote as a means of introducing that philosophy.
