This is the last part of a Pure Laine fiddle competition in Quebec -- the most intense fiddle contest I've ever seen.

From my friend Chris, who posted this video:

' Contestants take turns playing the A part (16 measures) of a reel of their choice. It has to be in the key indicated by the judge on suggestions from the audience. There can't be a break. And they can't play a tune that has already been played. '

My attempts to record something this morning went badly awry (including an eventual computer reboot), but here's a lovely new hop jig I'm working on learning, Hannah Harris’s "The Dog Who Chased the Ducks”, played (and explained) by Hannah herself: learn.hannahharrisceol.com/hop

Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival (Maine) was amazingly wonderful, especially after the rain on Wednesday. 4 perfect weather days and chilly, glove-wearing nights for picking.

came up in my fb memories, something I found on Jochre Yiddish OCR search in 2020 when looking for mentions of tsimbls (cimbaloms), the the boasting of a cantor from a satirical short story:

"My neck — a fiddle
my throat — a tsimbl
and I myself am a whole orchestra
When I pray, people fall like flies"

Source: Frehlikhe minuṭen Vol. 2, B.B. Kovner, 1919.

on “wake of the flood” (& with old & in the way) vassar clements was playing a remarkable from the 16th century, a recent gift from john hartford. you can just about it make out the headstock in a few shots from that summer. vassarclements.com/fiddle.html (thanks @mrcompletely!)
his isolated “mississippi half-step” just melts me, dig parts of it on the new deadcast: dead.net/deadcast/wake-flood-5

Michael Daves and Jacob Joliff sing Louvin Brothers’ “I Wish You Knew” at Green Mountain Bluegrass and Roots Festival. August 18, 2023 on the Lamplighter stage which starts at 11 pm down a wooded path to a field and stage. Foghorn Stringband played after them around midnight. Awesome sets.
