The fine tipped needle pierces the skin as the sound of the tattoo gun echoes in the background. I'd done this many times before; the ink that formed the canvas on my body told the stories of my life. I was a living tapestry, each image tied inextricably to the last. At every significant juncture in my life I'd return, to add another chapter; a constant reminder.

I lay exposed on the cold black chair; the smell of the sterilising solution wafted up my nose as I felt the scraping and scratching on my skin. The outline was the worst; lines needing to be retraced to ensure depth and clarity of the design. I tried hard not to fidget as the artist went to work; we'd spent weeks on the design and it had to be perfect. I would accept nothing less; the moment required precision and care.

As strange as it may sound, I found the pain of the process quite catharric. My first tattoo, when I was just a young and reckless lad was a flash piece; a stencil I'd chosen after a few too many drinks and not enough common sense. My parents were none to pleased. But one turned into two, then four and so the story goes. When I eventually got married, my wife's name took pride of place across my heart, followed closely by those of my children.

As the time passed, the pain of the tattoo eases. The artist works methodically, taking the utmost care. Like on any canvas, sometimes the artist need to make some alterations. Lost in the moment, the artist continues their work.

Overtaken by distraction

Of time
Of reality
Of who you are
And who I am
When we are one and the same
Because when you twitch, I turn
And when you fidget —

I fold.
