First of 30 lighthouses I'm going to visit in 2023, marking The Mamie Martin Fund's 30th year of supporting girls' education in Malawi.

Designed by Alan Stevenson in 1846 and now a Field Station, run by Aberdeen University. I have a theory that my gg grandfather, who eventually became a lighthouse keeper, once worked there as a joiner.

'Ecology of place' was a thing once, maybe it still is.

Younger researchers in ecology tend to work in 'study systems' it seems. 'Study systems' can have several meanings but ecology of place may not be one of them. Place is still important but now maybe just background. hmmm.

Field stations are certainly about place. Over the next few weeks we'll introduce Harkness Lab's ecology of place....

We've come to expect field stations to be equipped with all kinds of digital tech and databases. GIS, remote sensing, tracking gear, modern weather and environmental monitoring systems, etc.
