Should I be concerned that the fight sequences looked it it was staged the same way as the MidEast portion of Fenomena? TL;DR tht movie underplayed the rescue effort from the UN Peacekeepers which was then made up of the #Pakistan‍i and Malaysian battalions - the Pakistanis had to retreat but the Malaysians stayed with the US forces to get the downed men out. I never kept up past the initial flurry of official grousing when the movie came out but apparently around 10 years ago much of it was properly declassified or at least talked abt publicly, based on my impression from this vid: https://youtu.be/KacVH0pDgsI

#Rajah - pretty much drops you in media res into the story, which is one of a dude who suddenly found himself also in the middle of a story (of a power struggle) 😃. You don't need to know that much about the history of #Sarawak to get the movie, as I've just been yanksplained on how American moviegoers' ignorance means additional context is unneeded so any slapdash comparison will do*. So in that spirit I offer the barely accurate analogy of it being like The Last Samurai. (Which can't be any worse than comparing RRR to EEAAO**) Except it does flip a couple of tropes of the genre, but that's probably domestic politics that allowed such portrayals of Malay royals as just fuckin' assholes 😌.

I haven't said much about Mentega Terbang because just thinking about how it went down saddens and enrages me so much, and much of it has to do with how we don't actually have a stable majoritarian demographic - sociologically that's been key to 'tolerances' of dissident views. (It's why despite Thais' own Buddhist views on sexuality being just as conservative as Filipino Catholic ones, there's an impression that queer subpockets can live & even flourish, with caveats). So unlike other heterogeneous societies with stable majority or homogenous ones, even when tame non-mainstream views are being pushed by a majoritarian person, it cannot survive backlash. This is a recent example - what happened to that comedy club is another. This is one legacy of post-colonialism outside of the west as well as global islamic ethnofascism.

The premise initially felt like a riff of Eternal Sunshine but I think it mined a different emotional vein - certainly the headfake for me is that the Dream Girl is in fact not that, and it's actually a deeper story of loss and self and fears of dooming your relationship with your family history of future disability. And I'm always a sucker for any high-concept pitches: I wouldn't continually give Mamat Khalid a chance if I don't, but this is actually a flick that knows what it's doing with their premise.

There's a lot to chew over and I genuinely adored it, but i don't know if i can watch this gut punch so soon. BUT IF YOU'RE IN MALAYSIA, WATCH IT.
