239 followers · 288 posts · Server cinematheque.socialTonight watched "Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy)" (2009 Royal Albert Hall recording), which was operatic fan service, "Imagining Argentina" (2003), which was pretty good if a little too predictable, and just now, "Blumhouse's Fantasy Island" (2020). Do I even need to say what I think of that film? Probably not, but it was in fact ridiculous. The main cast was kinda wasted. And let us just say it was not a film with fantasy hair.

One thing that is appealing about Peele's work is the horror's secretness, and hiddenness, this hidden subculture of sickness.

Finally caught "Fanny Lye Deliver'd" last night, and it was brilliant! Loved it's sparseness. An aesthetic that allowed the actors, story, set, and direction to shine. Some of the scene setups are sublime. Can't recommend it highly enough...

BARDO (2022, dir. Iñárritu): On a moment-by-moment basis, Bardo is dazzling. Iñárritu shoots most of the film in wide angle, allowing you to see the full detail of every one of his fantastical locations and tableaus. I legitimately think his work is helping to push forward the art of cinema.
But also, I can understand why this movie would be unbearable to most people. 159 mins of tortured introspection with the barest of plots to speak of. Sure is pretty though.
