The focus is that they should be inspired to see films and reference them in their own work, not that they should become adept at film history.
Since they will have seen a lot of Hollywood and western film already, I would prefer to start with African and/or Asian film before moving on to the generally accepted canon of «great» works. Ousmane Sembène is an obvious choice, as is Yasujirô Ozu, but are there others? Any particular films you’d recommend?
